Vanilla is a tropical flowering plant of the orchid family, and the extraction of the absolute is a very expensive, complex, and lengthy process.

After planting, it takes about 4–5 years for vanilla to begin flowering. To grow at least 1 kilogram of cured vanilla pods, 600 hand-pollinated flowers are needed! Vanilla flowers are pollinated from November to January and continue to grow until June or July, when the crop is harvested. The pods are picked while still green and hand-selected and sorted by ripeness. Then the pods are blanched in hot water and fermented in a special way: during the day they are laid out in the sun, and at night they are left to "sweat" – this is the fermentation process during which the vanillin molecule develops (to obtain more vanillin, this process can take up to six months). Shortening this process results in an inferior, cheaper product. No wonder real vanilla is such an expensive commodity! And because of this long and complex cultivation and fermentation, synthetic vanillin has replaced natural vanillin.

Madagascar is the main vanilla-growing region, producing about 70% of the world's vanilla. Here vanilla has the best growing conditions, which is why the highest quality absolute is also produced here.

Aromatherapy properties:

• A familiar aroma to many awakens feelings, provides confidence, and creates a comfortable and cozy atmosphere;
• Vanilla helps to relax, lifts the mood, and improves sleep quality. It contains the same chemical elements as chocolate, which provide a feeling of joy;
• Considered an aphrodisiac;
• During pregnancy, it reduces nausea and is recommended to be inhaled.

Perfumery properties:

• Vanilla absolute is very valuable in perfumery because it smoothes out "sharp" edges, giving the fragrance unity and softness;
• It blends particularly well with coniferous aromas, softening them;
• To give vanilla a green aroma, combine it with violet absolute, and combining it with celery essential oil will give the fragrance intimacy.

Due to regulatory requirements, we cannot describe all the therapeutic properties of the essential oil here.

Use/recipes:

Use:

• Diffuse 3-5 drops into the air using a diffuser;
• Drop onto a tissue and place in a warm location, such as on a radiator. The heated essential oil will disperse beneficial molecules into the air;
• Add 5 drops to the water when mopping the floor;
• Pure essential oils are not used on the skin. They must be diluted with carrier oils. For massages, rubbing, and scenting, dilute with a carrier oil (almond, sesame, etc.): 10 drops of the mixture to 10 ml (two tablespoons) of carrier oil;
• Add to the bath, diluted with castile soap: 10 drops of essential oil to 10 ml of castile soap. Do not drip essential oil directly into the water, as oils do not dissolve in water but float on the surface, which can come into direct contact with the skin and irritate it;
• Drop 3 drops onto a damp cloth and place in a closet or clothes dryer to scent clothes. Some essential oils may stain white clothes!
• Use for inhalation: add 3-4 drops to hot water and breathe in the steam, or add to a personal inhaler;
• Keep a bottle of essential oil handy and, after removing the dropper, inhale 2-3 times.

How to diffuse essential oils correctly?

To achieve the maximum effect on our emotions (e.g., reducing stress, improving mood, calming, etc.), essential oils should be diffused in intervals, ideally 3-4 times for 15 minutes in an electric diffuser, with a break of at least 30 minutes between diffusions. Our brain, which is responsible for emotional regulation, is very plastic and tends to adapt to the environment, and thus also to the effects of essential oils. To achieve the best therapeutic effect on emotions, the brain needs dynamism, which is created precisely by diffusing essential oils in intervals.

If you are targeting the effects of essential oils on physical condition (e.g., to reduce nausea, purify the air, ease cold symptoms), diffuse essential oils several times a day for 30 minutes each time.

Dilution is mandatory. (Maximum concentration for facial cosmetics - 1.5%, for body massage - 3%)

For pregnant women: Safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

For children: Safe to use from birth.

Avoid using oxidized balsam fir essential oil, as it may cause skin irritation.

If the essential oil irritates the skin, it must be cleaned with any carrier oil you have on hand (olive, sunflower, etc.). Do not use water to wash off essential oils, as water will carry the essential oils deeper into the skin and only intensify the irritation.

To preserve the valuable properties of essential oils, they and their blends should be stored in a dark, cool place.

The basic rule of aromatherapy – less is more, i.e., essential oils work better in small doses.
